Research Associate in the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering's Connected Waters Initiative

Christian Anibas is a Research Associate based at the UNSW Water Research Laboratory in Manly Vale. He is an internationally recognized expert in on the investigation of hydrogeological and geophysical properties of the subsurface of the Earth.

Christian is currently working on the Thirlmere Lakes project, which aims to bring light to the ‘The Mysterious Hydrology of Thirlmere Lakes’ as a report states. The project investigates the sensitivity of the lakes and their surrounding wetlands to external influences, including the effects of mining activity, groundwater abstraction and long term metrological and climate change.

Connected with the WRL since September 2018 Christian has more than ten years of experience in academic research and training in Australia and abroad including Austria, Belgium, The Netherlands, Poland, South Africa, Kenya and Costa Rica. Beside English he is also proficient in German, Dutch and Spanish.


Research interests

Christian has two main field of research interests:

  1. The development and application of environmental heat tracing techniques to conceptualize, quantify and visualize groundwater flow processes in different temporal and spatial scales.
  2. Investigation and quantification of the potential of urban regions for geothermal installations, with focus on open-loop seasonal thermal energy storage facilities and the employment of the urban heat island effect.
